Nightmares can be common with trauma survivors. The nightmares can contain images, sounds, and feelings that are similar to the traumatic event. A survivor can lose sleep from the nightmares due to fear of falling asleep. At times the nightmares become sufficiently intense to result in waking up sweating, feeling short of breath, having muscle and chest tension, or experiencing a panic attack. The dreams may not include actual content of the traumatic event, but rather emotions that are similar.
